Gareth Southgate has named four Liverpool players in his England squad for September’s clashes with Spain and Switzerland.

The Three Lions will look to build on their semi-final place in the summer’s World Cup as they embark on their first games since the tournament next month.

First up, Wembley plays host to their UEFA Nations League opener against Spain on September 8, before travelling to the King Power Stadium in Leicester to take on Switzerland on September 11.

And the manager has called up four of Jurgen Klopp‘s first-team players, with Joe Gomez earning a recall after missing out in Russia.

The 21-year-old underwent surgery on an ankle injury picked up on England duty in May, ruling him out of contention for the World Cup, having been a likely inclusion after three caps.

His excellent start to the season could see him take up a starting berth at centre-back, but his ability to play at right-back will have also endeared him to Southgate.

Elsewhere, Jordan Henderson is retained after his starring role at the World Cup, despite only playing 67 minutes for Liverpool so far this season.

The Reds captain was England’s leader on the pitch, although Harry Kane wore the armband, and will hope to keep his place in the holding role—one which is under threat at Anfield.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is also included after being involved in Russia, and will be challenging Kieran Trippier for a starting role at right-back.

And surprisingly, Adam Lallana comes back into the fold despite playing just 489 minutes of senior football for club or country over the past year.

Elsewhere in the squad, Luke Shaw has been restored as Ashley Young misses out, while Danny Welbeck somehow retains his place after making his 40th appearance at the World Cup.

England’s clashes with Spain and Switzerland will both be shown live on Sky Sports.
