Aston Vila fans on Twitter were fuming with manager Steve Bruce after centre-back Tommy Elphick was allowed to leave the club on loan without a replacement coming in, leaving Villa looking very short of defensive options.

The 30-year-old had made three appearances in all competitions so far this season but his departure leaves just James Chester and loanee Axel Tuanzebe as the only recognised centre-backs at Villa Park. Bruce then will clearly be counting on midfielder Mile Jedinak and young right-back James Bree to adapt to the position that they have both appeared in at the start of this campaign.

Villa’s summer got off to a turbulent start as they lost the playoff final to Fulham and subsequently missed out on promotion and the riches of the Premier League. This plunged the club into financial difficulties and a winding-up order from HMRC was narrowly avoided before billionaires Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris bought a controlling stake in the club, saving them from administration under Dr Tony Xia.

While Villa fans can thank the new owners for this success, they were not happy at all with Bruce for allowing Elphick to leave, especially as the Englishman had even scored their first league goal of the season against his new club. Check out some of the best tweets from Villa fans below.
