Aston Vila fans on Twitter were fuming with manager Steve Bruce after centre-back Tommy Elphick was allowed to leave the club on loan without a replacement coming in, leaving Villa looking very short of defensive options.
The 30-year-old had made three appearances in all competitions so far this season but his departure leaves just James Chester and loanee Axel Tuanzebe as the only recognised centre-backs at Villa Park. Bruce then will clearly be counting on midfielder Mile Jedinak and young right-back James Bree to adapt to the position that they have both appeared in at the start of this campaign.
Villa’s summer got off to a turbulent start as they lost the playoff final to Fulham and subsequently missed out on promotion and the riches of the Premier League. This plunged the club into financial difficulties and a winding-up order from HMRC was narrowly avoided before billionaires Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris bought a controlling stake in the club, saving them from administration under Dr Tony Xia.
While Villa fans can thank the new owners for this success, they were not happy at all with Bruce for allowing Elphick to leave, especially as the Englishman had even scored their first league goal of the season against his new club. Check out some of the best tweets from Villa fans below.
Surely we have a CB in place as we let Elphick go?? #avfc

We surely cannot allow Elphick to go out on loan if we are not bringing in another CB? Can’t leave ourselves with just Chester, Jedinak and Tuanzebe… #avfc

Seems Scott McKenna of Aberdeen was the back up centre back, he’s no world beater but Elphick SHOULD NOT have been loaned out unless there was a replacement. #AVFC

I just know it won’t be long until Bruce blames a lack of CBs as a reason why we lost. Just remember he sanctioned the loan of Elphick #avfc

Elphick’s gone to Hull leaving us with the natural centre back options of….
James Chester. Tuanzebe.

Very strange letting Elphick go with a lack of CBs #AVFC

If we don’t get another Cb in I will actually give up with Bruce now Elphick has gone #avfc

Surely we’ve got a CB incoming? Baffled that we’ve allowed Elphick to go out on loan, we were already short at CB #AVFC
