The Catalan club has had to pay the huge figure in order to approach Griezmann about joining.
Buyout clauses have been mandatory in Spanish football contracts since 1985, and are designed so a player must pay a sum to their employer if they wish to leave their contract early.
The player can either pay the money themselves, or the approaching club can pay up.
Atletico are keen to keep the Frenchman, and his current contract runs until 2023. The club was furious after learning Griezmann had been in contact with Barcelona in March, accusing them of ‘wrecking their season.’

They also refused to accept Barcelona’s request to pay the release clause in installments.
The Atletico Madrid striker even caused anger among Barcelona supporters last year after backing out of a transfer deal and signing a new long-term deal with Atletico instead.
As a result of this, if the £108million deal goes through, Barcelona are planning to hold his unveiling while the Nou Camp pitch is being relaid, so no fans will be allowed in the stadium.
Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde is desperate to acquire Griezmann’s services before Monday, when Barcelona’s first-team are due back for pre-season.

If the deal doesn’t go through, Atletico Madrid have insisted he turn up to pre-season training.
If it all goes to plan, Griezmann will be calling time on his five-year career at Atletico, after joining from Real Sociedad in 2014.
The France international made 257 appearances for Atletico, winning the Europa League and UEFA Super Cup in 2018.
