Sydney FC coach Steve Corica has revealed the pain and disappointment of failing to win the A-League Premiers Plate meant he couldn’t watch Perth Glory lift the trophy.

The Sky Blues fell short of their targeted silverware as the Glory defeated Newcastle Jets 1-0 to open up an assailable eight-point lead at the top of the A-League with two regular season matches to play.

Perth lifted the Premiers Plate in front of their supporters after the victory against the Jets at HBF Park, but Corica wasn’t able to take in the presentation of the trophy the Sky Blues have won the past two consecutive seasons.

“Of course [losing the Plate] it hurts. The plan at the start of the year was to win the Premiership,” Corica said.

“I didn’t watch them pick up the (Premiers) Plate. I couldn’t do that – it was a little bit hard to take. Congratulations to them.”

The Sky Blues welcome the Glory to Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Thursday night and even though they can’t overhaul the West Australians, they still need to make sure they finish in second position above Melbourne Victory to secure a double chance in finals.

Corica’s side currently sits two points clear of Victory, who end their campaign with away matches against Adelaide United and Western Sydney Wanderers.

“It’s massive for our season to now finish second,” he said.

“This is the first time we have played [Glory] at home – we have had two away games in Perth.

“We’ve won one and we’ve lost one so this is an important game for us – especially at home in front of our fans leading into the last couple of games of the season and semi-finals.

“They’re a good team – we’ve got to give them credit because they have just won the Premiership. They have been the most consistent team all season and it’s our job to get the win tomorrow.”

Sydney FC captain Alex Brosque needs to pass a fitness test for a sore ankle but is likely to play some part against Glory, but Michael Zullo will miss another week with a hamstring injury.
