Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League with a whimper and suffered their fourth successive defeat on the road as they were beaten 3-0 by Barcelona on Tuesday night.

It was always going to be an uphill task for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his men in the Camp Nou considering they were already trailing 1-0 from the first-leg of their quarter-final tie.

However, they had shown against Paris Saint-Germain previously that they could produce the spectacular on their travels, but it wasn’t to be this time around.

The Norwegian manager selected Ashley Young, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof as his back four, and you instantly feared for them considering those players were coming up against Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho.

It proved to be the case as Young dallied on the ball in the 16th minute, was robbed of possession by Messi who then went on a run before curling the ball into the far corner.

The experienced United man in particular is struggling right now having also suffered a shocker against West Ham at the weekend, and in some ways it was surprising that he got the nod over Diogo Dalot at left-back.

The image above is something that has become all too familiar for supporters of the Red Devils, with Jones looking dejected and Young bemused.

The former continues to be something of a regular fixture in the starting XI but his performance on Tuesday wasn’t at the level it needed to be so an unlikely victory could occur.

In all honesty, these two really shouldn’t be anywhere near a Manchester United team-sheet if the club wants to progress in the next few seasons, and the very fact they are on the pitch tells you the situation the Old Trafford outfit currently find themselves in compared to when Sir Alex Ferguson was their manager.
