When Zinedine Zidane shocked the footballing world and stated that Real Madrid needed a change of coach, he wasn’t lying, according to Raphael Varane.
By all accounts, it was a disparate LaLiga campaign for the club last season and Varane believes that his old coach wouldn’t have made such a claim if he didn’t think it was true.
“It is true that a small change can be good for everyone,” the defender admitted to Real France.
“We will find out later if Zidane was right. Our league season can be taken as a sign that he is right. Maybe we need it, we’ll see.
“If he says it, it is probably because he saw things and felt things. He is a very sensitive coach to the attitude of the players and what we can feel.
“So, if he said that, it isn’t for nothing. I think there is some truth.”
The surprise nature behind Zidane’s exit was spread from fans to the Real squad alike, who Varane reveals only found out of the coach’s decision that morning.
“We were notified just before the press conference by a message sent to each player,” he noted. “Obviously we were a little surprised, it was a sad moment.
“[I felt] a little surprise, astonishment too. In any case, what he did is simply amazing.”
However, Zidane’s exit won’t upset the centre-back’s continuity in the Spanish capital and he hopes to remain in Blancos shirts for some time to come.
“For now I feel very good in Madrid,” he added.
“I have the confidence of the club, a contract until 2022, so for me everything is going well in Madrid, and I hope it lasts a long time.”
