According to The Daily Mail, Liverpool have informed Borussia Dortmund of their desire to sign Jadon Sancho this summer, and they hope that Jurgen Klopp’s previous links with the club could give them the upper hand.
What’s the story
Sky Germany journalist Jesco von Eichmann has said that Jadon Sancho will “leave Dortmund this summer”, which is likely to lead to a mad race for his signature.

The Reds have now told Die Schwarzgelben that they want to take him to Anfield this summer, with the German club expected to demand at least £100m. Manchester City are also expected to make an offer, whilst Barcelona, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United are all also keen.
The report adds that the Merseyside outfit “will hope manager Jurgen Klopp’s connections with Dortmund, who he led for seven years, will work in their favour in pursuit of the Londoner.”
Not always that simple
The link between Klopp and Dortmund is clear. As previously mentioned, the 52-year-old spent seven years at the Signal Iduna Park, winning two Bundesliga titles, one German Cup, whilst also taking them to the 2013 Champions League final. He is a legend at BVB, and that means that he is likely to have a good relationship with Michael Zorc and Co.
However, it is not always that simple. During his career, Klopp has signed just one player from a former club – Neven Subotic went with his boss from Mainz to Dortmund in 2008. Some players have even openly explained that Klopp’s presence on Merseyside persuaded them not to make the switch – we’re looking at you, Ilkay Gundogan (FantasyPL via Metro).
Of course, there aren’t too many players that Klopp managed who are still in Dortmund considering he left five years ago. But in Sancho’s case, former connections are unlikely to play too much of a role. The 19-year-old is clearly his team’s most valuable asset, and there are a number of clubs who would like to sign him. Given the interest, it will surely be about getting the best possible price for him, from whomever that maybe. If Liverpool don’t match what Dortmund want, whether Klopp has a connection or not, then why would they let him go there?
And even if a bid were accepted, it is no guarantee that Sancho would choose the Reds. He is, after all, a childhood Chelsea fan, one of the sides who are also in pursuit. That may be something that attracts him to London instead of the north-west.
