Leo Messi

One player who never tires of making history is Lionel Messi. In recent years, there has never been a season which went by without La Pulga establishing a new record or writing his name in another page of LaLiga Santander history.

On Saturday night, Messi has another chance to keep adding his name to the record books.

If Barcelona manage to beat Atletico at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano, Messi would pull level with Raul as the player with the most wins over the Colchoneros in history.

For now, the legendary Real Madrid striker leads that ranking with 17 wins against them in 27 fixtures.

The ex-Real Madrid captain and top scorer in their history until the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo was a shining example.

He famously started his career in the Atletico youth system and would often pop up to haunt them in city derbies, becoming a nightmare for Atletico.

Messi hasn’t been left behind though and in fact he is on the verge of surpassing the Real hero.

In fact, it is only against Sevilla who he has managed more goals against in his decorated career.

Messi has played 36 games against Atletico and has scored 28 goals during that time, representing the clear danger to Cholo Simeone‘s side.

The last time the sides met on match day 27 of last season, the game was won 1-0 thanks to a solitary free-kick from Messi.

It is very rare that he has put together several games without scoring against the Rojiblancos.

The biggest drought of his career in the fixture came between May 2013 and May 2014.

As for his goalscoring feats in the fixture, he has also managed an impressive three hat-tricks against Atleti.

The first came in 2008/09 before repeating the feat in 2010/11 and 2011/12.
