Napoli lost their first pre-season friendly, falling 2-1 to Benevento after defensive errors from Nikola Maksimovic and Sebastiano Luperto.

Roberto Insigne, Lorenzo’s younger brother and a former Napoli youth team product, almost opened the scoring within nine minutes, but his strike thumped the upright.

The Partenopei had taken the lead with Jose Callejon scoring the first goal of the summer on an Amin Younes assist.

Callejon also skimmed the woodwork from Faouzi Ghoulam’s pass, but Maksimovic’s fresh-air clearance allowed Massimo Coda to equalise.

The second half was dominated by substitutions from both sides, but Benevento snatched victory with practically the last kick of the game.

Dejan Vokic pounced on a Luperto moment of uncertainty to go clear on goal and give Pippo Inzaghi’s side the win.

Napoli: Karnezis (Contini 46); Malcuit (Di Lorenzo 46), Maksimovic (Tonelli 46), Luperto, Ghoulam (Zanoli 63); Callejon (Zerbin 68), Rog, Gaetano (Palmiero 63), Younes; Tutino (Sgarbi 76), Verdi (Zedadka 76)
