With the return of Zinedine Zidane as Real Madrid coach, rumours have been swirling as to how he will change things at the club and former player Michael Owen believes that there are just 10 players who are good enough to strengthen the Los Blancos line up.

The English man knows full well the pressure of playing for Real Madrid having spent a season at the club between 2004 and 2005 and MARCA caught up with him to see what he though of the current situation Los Blancos find themselves in.

Do you still follow news about Real Madrid?

“Of course, and of course it’s been a disappointing season which hasn’t been the the case in recent years. They won a lot of Champions Leagues and this is just a bad period. I know the club aren’t happy now, but they are coming off the back of a successful era, and I enjoyed watching them. Santi Solari is a great friend of mine since I was at Real Madrid, he is a very good person. But not the king has returned. Zizou, Zidane has returned and the happiness also seems to have come back to the people connected to the club.”

What do you think of Zidane’s return?

“I’m happy for everyone because he was a successful player and coach. I’m sure the rest he had was good. In football, being a coach is very stressful.”

Is it necessary for Real Madrid to sign players like Hazard or Kane?

“They are great players, but Real Madrid already have great players. Obviously, with the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and Zidane, there was a big gap that is very difficult to fill. Hopefully with the return of Zidane there will be more stability in every way. And then, I am sure that there will be reinforcments and that Florentino, as always, will look for the best signings.”

Would you recommend the signing of Kane to Florentino Perez?

“He is very good. In the Premier League right now we have amazing players like Hazard. In the Spanish league it is also difficult to play at Real Madrid and win even more. Maybe they are looking for players playing in the Premier League. But in that case they have to be very special in order to improve the team. I think there are only ten players in the world who can play for or live up to Real Madrid’s standards.”

What do you think when people question Bale’s passion for football and his position at the club?

“We have read things about him in England. Here we still have a lot of interest in him. He has many qualities and surely when he retires and looks back he’ll be proud of what he has have achieved.”

Did enjoy a being a British footballer at Real Madrid?

“I enjoyed it, I loved the experience. I was very lucky that I played alongside Figo, Raul, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Salgado, Beckham… and I felt comfortable with them.”

Who are your favourites to win the Champions League this season?

“I’m convinced that it’ll be won by an English team this year. It looks like Liverpool are more focussed on winning the Premier League, and the fans will definitely prefer to win that than the Champions League. Manchester City have won the Premier League in recent years and I now is the time to go for the Champions League. It would be nice if the trophy returned to England.”
