Newcastle did some good business during the January transfer window.
The Magpies signed Danny Rose – a Champions League finalist – Valentino Lazaro and Nabil Bentaleb on loan until the end of the season. All three have experience in top leagues, as well Europe’s premier club competition. They also tried to sign Boubakary Soumare from Lille, but that didn’t go through in the end.

Now, they are said to be eyeing Scunthorpe’s John McAtee – which is a bit of a drop off from those players previously mentioned. The report from the Grimsby Telegraph says that multiple sources have confirmed the interest.
This has got the Toon supporters talking, and it seems some aren’t exactly thrilled with the news.

Hahahahahahaha exactly what we need

Why do we sign strikers that don’t score goals!!
— Rob Materna (@maternarob1991) February 13, 2020
It’s not exactly the kind of link that will get supporters on the edge of their seats. With just one goal in 12 league appearances this term, he is far from prolific – that is the same as Joelinton, who has as many strikes in 25 Premier League matches to date.
Some believe – and hope – this is for the club’s U23s squad.
I’m guessing for the U23s?

I hope this is for the u23s

This would make far more sense – Steve Bruce is crying out for some proven quality in front of goal, and McAtee doesn’t appear to be able to provide that.
Some fans, meanwhile, have linked this with Ivan Toney.
Let toney go 4 pennies n then sign this lad to sell 4 pennies later.. Our clubs is ridiculous
— YoungY (@myoungy2805) February 13, 2020
Seems like a repeat of Ivan Toney
— Adam Stordy (@AJStordy2) February 13, 2020
Why not just go n get toney back…. We have a sell on clause so wouldn’t have to pay the £13m Bournemouth are rumoured to be spending lol

Toney was signed by Newcastle in 2015, but made just four appearances in three years before being sold to Peterborough. This term, he is the top scorer in League One with 23 strikes, and is said to be attracting interest from Bournemouth. He may be the one that got away.
