The last epic chapter in Inter’s history took place at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, where Jose Mourinho led them to their third Champions League title and sealed a historic treble.
But soon after that great achievement came the downfall.
A game of musical chairs with coaches and players ensued, where no one seemed to be able do anything right and results certainly did not come.
There was more change on top of that, as Massimo Moratti sold the club for 300 million euros to Erick Thohir in October of 2013.
Now, eight years after that treble, the Neoazzurri are smiling again, as they know that this time things are being done right.
The hope that is in the air in one half of Milan is not coincidence, as the financial stability brought by the Chinese group Zhang Jindong has in turn helped bring stability on the pitch.
“We must continue to exert ourselves in order to build one of the best football teams in the world”, said Steven Zhang, who just two days ago renewed coach Luciano Spalletti until 2021.
This summer Inter have shown that they are serious about their return to the elite level of European football and the 109.5m euros that they’ve invested are proof of it.
The signings read as follows: Radja Nainggolan (38m euros), Lautaro Martinez (16m euros), Federico Dimarco (7m euros), Sime Vrsljko (on loan, 6.5m euros), Matteo Politano (on loan, 5m euros), Keita Balde (on loan, 5m euros, plus 32m euros purchase option for next season) Stefan De Vrij (free agent ) and Kwadwo Asamoah (free agent).
Football is all about sensations and, beyond the spending spree, there is a real feeling of hope and progress at the Italian club.
These are the reasons why.
Insurance in goal
Samir Handanovic will again be the last line of defence, and he’s just as tall as he is experienced.
It will be the 34-year-old Slovenian’s sixth year at Inter.
His leadership, aerial prowess, and incredible reflexes make him a life saver between the goal posts.
A rejuvenated defence
The Miranda-Skriniar duo worked to perfection last season.
With them on the pitch Inter only conceded only 30 goals in 38 matches.
Now, Spalleti will also have De Vrij at his disposal, one of the best defenders in Serie A last season.
It’s not only the middle of the defence that has been improved, as full-backs Asamoah, Vrsaljko and Dimarco are some of the different players that Inter will be able to line up.
A physical and talented midfield
With Nainggolan‘s arrival, Inter gain muscle, personality, experience and a major presence in the box.
The ‘Belgian Volcano’ will play next to a perfect sidekick in Marcelo Brozovic who will bring the necessary pause, ball movement and tactical balance.
Speed and scoring on the wing
With Balde on board, Inter will have a vast array of possibilities on the wing.
If that weren’t enough, Ivan Perisic, Politano, Yann Karamoh and Antonio Candreva will all be looking to contribute.
Inter will have a plethora of dynamic players on the wing with speed and scoring potential.
A dance partner for Icardi
The arrival of Lautaro Martinez will finally give Icardi a perfect partner in crime, as the two Argentines already seem to have a great relationship on and off the pitch.
It’s no coincidence that Martinez will wear No.10, as he has all the makings of a world-class player.
