Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was accepting of the fact that his Manchester United side weren’t quite up to Barcelona‘s level as they fell to the Catalans at the quarter-final stage of the Champions League.

Barcelona blew United away at times, and the Red Devils‘ boss believes they are the favourites to go on and win the tournament.

“I think they are [favourites to win the Champions League],” he said.

“With the quality they have, everything is possible.

“I wouldn’t bet against them; to me, they’re favourites.”

Lionel Messi was again decisive for the Catalans and Solkjaer admitted he was the player who made the difference.

“You can make whatever tactical changes you like,” he began, “but if you have a player like Messi then everything is easier.

“He’s a player with exceptional talent. He and Cristiano Ronaldo have been the best players of the last decade.

“We know why he’s won so many things.”

Despite improvements since he took charge after Jose Mourinho, United still have a long way to go before reaching previous heights.

“We’ve seen the difference between the two teams,” he continued.

“The quality of their shooting was extraordinary. We thought we had it right in the first few minutes.

“We know there’s work ahead and we have to do it. Things don’t change overnight.”
