Real Madrid are set to venture into Salamanca for the fourth time, yet in the six matches against the teams from the region, they have won every single one, yet the first meeting came back in 1907 when Los Blancos faced a team made up of Irish students.

It was the fifth edition of the tournament, yet it saw the first appearance of football in Salamanca at a professional level in Spain.

The team that travelled to Madrid was developed between March 24 and March 30, and made up entirely of Irish students.

They were students of the Saint Patrick Royal College of Irish Nobles, an organisation founded by Philip II to educate the Irish youth of the country in Catholic practices.

The first game ever played by the Salamanca club took place on March 25 of that year, and it was a 5-0 defeat to Vizcaya.

As was the case back in 1907, the format of the tournament saw Salamanca play just two days later when they defeated Recreativo 2-0.

Just 24 hours passed before they met with Real Madrid, and lost 5-0, and their participation in the competition came to an end with a 2-1 defeat against Celta Vigo.

Real Madrid would eliminate Salamanca from the 1943 and 1996 editions of the competition, and many expect the same to occur in 2020 when Unionistas take on Los Merengues.
