Maurizio Sarri has no time to waste in reshaping a Chelsea defence he will surely look to move away from the three-man system that Antonio Conte stuck to so doggedly.

The former Napoli manager looks set to turn to his native Italy and bring in Juventus defender Daniele Rugani to bolster a backline that struggled at times last season as the Blues mounted an awful title defence.

That could well be bad news for the likes of David Luiz and Gary Cahill, who are remnants of Chelsea’s 2012 Champions League triumph and, more recently, formed the backbone of the 2016/17 cruise to the Premier League title.

Rugani looks set to be the next great, old-school Italian defender in the mould of Giorgio Chiellini and we asked Blues fans whether he would be an upgrade on ageing stalwart Cahill and the result was overwhelming.
