Spain Final decision still to be made
Sergio Ramos has declared that he would like to play in the Olympic Games next summer, as well as the European Championship, despite the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF)‘s belief that the three ‘older’ players for the Olympics will come from Spain‘s victorious European Under-21 Championship side from this summer.
From the coaching staff’s perspective, they want to reward the work already done at the underage level and are not considering ‘external’ options unless it is necessary for sporting reasons.
When the time comes, a discussion will occur to see which players are available, with one eye on Robert Moreno‘s 23-man squad for Euro 2020. A lot will depend on whether certain players can participate in both tournaments, while injuries will also be a factor, too.
On the other hand, in the dressing room they would open their arms to Sergio Ramos. Practically the entire squad believes that the presence of the Real Madrid captain could be pivotal in their hopes of returning from the Olympics with a gold medal.
“For him, it would be the icing on an extraordinary career and he would help a lot as we go for the gold,” one player said.
“It would be a very positive thing for everyone because it would give us a great leap in quality,” another stated.
“He would be a great captain and we would win a lot with him,” a member of the squad said.
