According to West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini, the Chilean turned down the chance to sign former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure this summer.
‘We explained to Yaya clearly why he cannot come here’
When responding to a tweet posted by Yaya Toure’s agent in regards to Toure’s move, Pellegrini stated,
“Unfortunately, they were the words of Yaya’s agent.
“I spoke to Yaya, I know him and appreciate him as a person. He is a very good player but in the moment, when we were doing our squad list, that position was covered for other players.
“We needed money to bring in players in other positions so we explained to Yaya clearly why he cannot come here.
“I hope he will find a good club, a big club because he is a very good player.”
The tweet that Pellegrini was responding to from Toure’s agent read,
“It’s not West Ham 100%. Yaya is a champion. The last place is not for him.”
It would later be revealed that Yaya Toure is set to join Greek side Olympiakos this summer.
West Ham’s poor start
Despite adding a new manager and a host of new players this summer, West Ham have not had a great start to the season.
A new look West Ham side would take on Liverpool in their opening game of the 2018/19 season.
Unfortunately, West Ham would get well and truly beaten 4-0 by Jurgen Klopp’s men.
The Hammers would then host Bournemouth in their first home game of the season.
However, they would also lose this game 2-1.
West Ham then took on Arsenal in search of their first points of the season.
Pellegrini’s men would take on early lead in the game but they would still lose 3-1.
