Barcelona Rejected chance to replace Valverde
Quique Setien‘s appointment as Barcelona‘s new head coach has left Xavi Hernandez with an uncertain future.
The former Blaugrana midfielder was close to replacing Ernesto Valverde in the Camp Nou dugout but ended up rejecting the club’s offer.
Xavi saw his opportunity to coach Barcelona coming in the summer rather than now as he continues to be in charge of Al-Sadd in Qatar.
However, Setien has signed a deal until June 2022, which leaves Xavi‘s plans to take over his beloved Barcelona in the near future in tatters.
The 2021 presidential elections will be key to deciding whether Xavi is given the opportunity to become first team boss at the Catalan club again.
He hasn’t got the best relationship with current president Josep Maria Bartomeu and, should he stay at the helm after the elections, it would damage Xavi‘s prospects further.
Ronald Koeman, who has openly revealed that he has a clause in his contract as Netherlands head coach to leave for Barcelona after Euro 2020, has also been left wondering what the future lies for him.
